Reviews

Being the movie freak that I am, I decided to write a review for each movie I have seen recently. Since it is still summer, I have been watching a good amount of movies.

Each rating will be given on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being the best, and of course 1 being the worst.

Requiem for a Dream

I give it a....8.5 (mostly because it was so believable, intense, and shot in a very eccentric, but awesome way)

Requiem focuses on basically a group of four people. These four people are basically junkies. Three of these people are hooked up heroin, while the last is hooked on speed. All four people start off as almost normal people. Each have a goal or a "dream" but they try to achieve their dream through the wrong method, drugs. The people in this movie composes of a couple who want to attain a shop of their own. Their friend is a black guy who wants to achieve the ultimate goal by pleasing his mother, and getting off the streets. These three people try to achieve this goal by selling heroin. The last person is an old lady. She attempts to lose weight so that she can fit into a dress that she treasures, and appear on a television show. The lady goes to a doctor who is a charlatan, and prescribes speed to the unsuspecting old lady. The shots in this movie are definately different. Each time the characters use the drugs, they portray it in a very vivid but different manner. I can't quite explain it, you would have to watch it to see. The way the director shot the movie is really well done. He approaches it in a different manner. The director portrays the full affects of drugs and what it does to a person. You experience first hand what it is to be like a drug addict. The actors in the movie did quite a marvelous job. Each performance was very believeable. You really did have pity for each character. The climax of the movie was in the last thirty or so minutes of it. Those last thirty or so minutes were probably one of the most intense momments of a movie that I have ever seen. The music especially contributed to those last intense momments (the music is actually very befitting, and gives the whole movie justice). It is quite hard to stomache. I could still feel my bones shuddering afterwards (not because it was scary or anything, it was just that intense).

Trainspotting

I give it a....7 (another heroin addict movie. It isn't nearly as intense or serious as "Requiem for a Dream" nor is it as hard hitting)

Ewan McGregor stars as Renton, a heroin addict who tries to get off his addiction. He fails a couple of times, and runs into his old habits with his buddies. In the end though, he finally achieves redemption. This movie did not have too much of a dark undetone. Trainspotting portrays the slow deterioration of a person when induced to the use of heroin. This is especially visible in Renton's friend Tommy, who at first was completely clean, but slowly turned into a pale ghost of what he was before, and eventually lead to death. Trainspotting gave Ewan McGregor a platform into his stardom today. He did play his role quite well. The overall message of Trainspotting? Choose life over deterioration.

Wedding Crashers

I give it a....7 (just a funny movie)

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn crash weddings to meet girls. Unexpectedly, Owen Wilson falls for a girl, and a girl falls for Vince Vaughn. Wedding Crashers was just one of those stupid funny movies. I laughed many times. The story was ok. It was a typical cliche romance. Of course, in the end, they both get the girls, but who didn't expect that one? Will Farrel makes a cameo, and damn, hes hilarious!!

The Constant Gardener

I give it a 8.5 for being a good political drama with conspiracies!!

At first you may be confused by the movie because of its constant flashbacks and no clear explanation of the point of the plot, but then it becomes apparent what is going on. There is a conspiracy going on with the pharmaceutical companies and the government. Basically, they are using poor African citizens as test subjects. Rachel Weisz attempts to unravel this conspiracy being the activist that she is. Her husband, Ralph Fiennes is at first reluctant to all of her snooping, but after her death, he continues her work. This movie truly touches the heart. It truly make the audience aware of problems that are currently going on in Africa. It makes you want to join the Peace Corps right after leaving the theatre (at least I felt that way). If anything at all, it touches the heart and gives you at least in the briefest of momments a feeling of upmost pity for such horrible atrocities. I can honestly say, I almost cried, and I do not cry often in movies. At times the movie may run a little slow, but in the end, it is well worth it.
